Fall Literacy Night

College Station,10/26/23

Parents, students, and educators at College Station Elementary were in for a delightful treat tonight as the school hosted a captivating Fall Literacy Night event. The event, aimed at promoting a love for reading and learning, featured engaging activities that left both young and old spellbound.

One of the highlights of the evening was the teachers' interactive demonstration on the art of "Marking the Text" while reading. This innovative teaching technique encourages students to actively engage with the text they are reading by underlining, highlighting, or annotating important information, helping to improve comprehension and critical thinking skills. Ms. Phillips, first grade teacher, demonstrated the mentor text that she uses daily in her classroom. It was all about why people get involved in their communities. Mrs. Moore, fourth grade homeroom teacher, demonstrated “Marking the Text” with a Math problem. Ms. Larry, fifth grade homeroom teacher, demonstrated how students can “Mark the Text” with an article about fainting goats. The teachers used these various texts to showcase the versatility of this method across different age groups and subjects.

Parents and guardians were particularly enthralled by the teachers' ability to make reading an exciting experience for the students. It's not every day you see educators showcasing their passion for literature in such a dynamic and accessible way.

Adding to the evening's allure was the musical talent of Mr. Thompson, the school's music teacher, who provided a mesmerizing backdrop of melodies "in the yard." The soothing tunes set the perfect ambiance for the event, making the night even more enjoyable for everyone in attendance.

But the excitement didn't stop there. Ms. Hughes, the school's talented art teacher, led a concurrent activity for her part of "Art in the Yard." Here, with the backdrop of Mr. Thompson’s music, she indulged in an open-air art session by creating her own chalk drawing while onlookers watched her pumpkin art come to life.

The collaboration between teachers, parents, and students during our Fall Literacy Night and “Art in the Yard” is a testament to CSES’ commitment to creating a supportive learning environment. We believe that learning is not confined to textbooks; it extends to the arts and to fostering a love for reading.

The Literacy Night event was a resounding success, not just for its engaging activities but also for the sense of community it fostered. Parents and students left with a renewed enthusiasm for reading and learning.

In an era when digital devices often vie for children's attention, College Station Elementary has taken a step in reinforcing the significance of reading as an integral part of every child's education. The success of this event underscores the importance of creativity and innovation in teaching and learning, making it an unforgettable night for all who attended.

As the event came to a close, Mrs. Evans expressed her gratitude to the teachers, parents, and students for their enthusiastic participation and their shared commitment to education. The enthusiasm and spirit of the Literacy Night will undoubtedly continue to inspire and motivate the school community to make reading and learning an ever-present joy in their lives.
